Relax with Yoga in the Park this summer

Post Date:06/04/2019 4:10 PM

Minnesota summers may be much shorter than Richfield residents would prefer, but it’s all the more reason to take advantage of warm days and fresh air while it lasts.

If residents looking for an easy way to get outside and relax, look no further than Yoga in the Park, offered every Thursday in June and July at Augsburg Park.

The program, led by certified yoga instructor Allie Badaczewski, began last summer.

Badaczewski began taking classes in college as a way to unwind from stress, and quickly found a passion for yoga. Wanting to learn more, she began working towards her instructor certification.

“I gained so much in-depth knowledge through the instructor certification process,” explained Badaczewski. “As soon as I finished my certification, I was so excited to get to share everything I learned with other people.”

And that she did.

As outdoor yoga began increasing in popularity, Recreation Supervisor Nick Thompson reached out to Badaczewski to see if she would be interested in leading a weekly class for the city.

She agreed, and the free, drop-in class was an immediate hit with residents.

“We didn’t really know what to expect when we came up with the idea for Yoga in the Park,” said Badaczewski. “However, the positive reaction towards the class surged. Even after a few rain days last summer that required moving inside, people still showed up on Thursday evenings to de-stress and find a good headspace.”

Yoga is a chance to get in touch with your mind and body, but it’s also an opportunity to connect with the outdoors.

“Yoga in the Park is a great way for people to not only enjoy a free yoga class or try something new, but to make use of the parks in Richfield in the peak summer months,” said Thompson.

Residents need not worry if they are a novice yogi.

“You don’t need to be a yoga expert to join,” remarked Badaczewski. “We focus on the basics, and really just want to take advantage of the fresh air and get a chance to unwind.”

So, if residents are looking for a relaxing way to enjoy their Thursday evenings this summer, swing by Augsburg Park every Thursday in June and July (except July 5), from 6-6:45 p.m.

Just bring a yoga or exercise mat and some water.
