Celebrating Earth Day and beyond: Sustainable activities in Richfield this spring

Richfield, Minn. (4-12-2024) – April is a time when many of our thoughts turn toward spring, spending time outdoors and giving back to nature. Richfield has several upcoming events and programs to help you celebrate Arbor Day, Earth Day and more!

To celebrate, two events are being held in the days leading up to Earth Day, which is officially recognized on April 22. On Saturday, April 20th, the community is invited to join Sustainability Commission members in a Community Cleanup of Taft Park from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. To join in, meet the group at the parking lot next to Taft Bike Park. In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled to April 27th, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Materials and equipment will be provided for this free, family-friendly event. Find additional details about the Community Cleanup of Taft Park on the city calendar at www.richfieldmn.gov/calendar.

On Sunday, April 21st, the community is invited to Wood Lake Nature Center to enjoy a free and expanded Earth Day Celebration from 1-4 p.m. The event will include live animal presentations, door prizes, bonfire with s’mores, service project opportunities throughout the park, a community booth fair, presentations and nature hikes. Additional Earth Day Celebration details can be found on the city calendar at www.richfieldmn.gov/calendar.

Arbor Day is on April 26th. Richfield Public Works is offering their annual Tree Sale to Richfield residents. Residents can pre-order one tree per household by May 3, or while supplies last. Tree varieties offered this year include a variety of native tree species (Hackberry, Bur Oak, Red Oak, Swamp White Oak, River Birch, Blue Beech, Serviceberry), and range from $44 - $62. Tree pickup will be on Saturday May 4th. Find all the Tree Sale details at: www.richfieldmn.gov/treesale.

In addition, Richfield residents can order rain barrels at 25% off retail price from the Recycling Association of Minnesota's spring Rain Barrel Sale. There’s a limited number of rain barrels available through the combined sale with Bloomington, so don’t miss out! Pick-up will be at the Richfield Farmers Market on the morning of Saturday May 4th. Note: If Richfield/Bloomington sells out, residents are welcome to purchase from other locations as noted. To order a rain barrel, visit: www.richfieldmn.gov/rainbarrel.
